The Rano Kau caldera
Discover the cliffs and lookout point of Easter Island on a hike
The hiking adaptation of tour T6 – THE CULT OF THE BIRD-MAN on our GUIDED TOURS page.
Here too, the walking tour combines history, geography and Dantesque landscapes.
History because it is around and on the volcano that the ultimate pagan religion developed before the Christianization of Rapa Nui. Geography because we are surveying the slopes of the most beautiful volcano on Easter Island (extinct) and the panorama over the rest of the island is unrivaled. Just like the other landscapes: the low-angle views of the Pacific Ocean, those of the 3 islets that are sanctuaries for migratory birds that come to breed there in the austral spring, and the interior lagoon of the volcano, will amaze you!
It’s a walk that everyone can do and it would be a shame to do without it.
Useful information: the entrance ticket to the Rapa Nui National Park allows you to visit the archaeological sites as many times as you wish, for a validity of 10 days, EXCEPTIONS MADE of the statue quarry (Rano Raraku) and the village Orongo ceremonial ceremony. So don’t go to Orongo before this hike and take advantage of your English-speaking guide for a complete guided tour of the site during this very beautiful walk.
The towering cliffs of the volcano shelter one of the most beautiful panoramas on Easter Island

2 places on the program for this half day.
1 – ARA O TE MOAI. Archaeological trails along the coastal plains of Easter Island. Surrounded by maritime and volcanic landscapes, around a dozen Moai are found along the trails. What really happened? Were these stone giants abandoned here during transportation? Have they ever stopped? You will discover everything during the walk with the first interested parties before your eyes.
2 – RANO RARAKU. The mysteries and questions surrounding these Neolithic colossi are even more surprising when you visit the quarry from which they were extracted several centuries ago. True testimonies of the past, the statues are present in all their stages of manufacture: from the simple sketch to the finished work, they are lying down, lying down, raised, broken, whole. And its characteristics differ a little from those that are already transported throughout the island.
From your accommodation we head towards the southeast coast of the island, and, after half an hour of travel, we arrive at Rano Raraku, the quarry where the large stone statues for which the island is famous were extracted. the moais.
The place is sacred. The setting is exceptional: on the slopes of the ancient volcano we walked among dozens of statues. Whether abandoned during manufacturing and frozen in the rock walls or erected awaiting possible transportation, they have been there for several centuries and await you as guardians of the place.
